As you get older, you may notice that your eyesight is getting worse. You might have more trouble driving at night and colors may not be as vibrant as they once were. With over half of the population developing cataracts at some point in their lives, you are not alone.

While some symptoms are common as you get older, such as a decreased ability to read fine print and visual floaters, other signs are a cause for concern. If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your eye care provider immediately:

  • vision suddenly is lost or blurry without explanation
  • quick flashes of light appear out of nowhere
  • your eyes hurt
  • your eye becomes red or swollen
  • you see double

Most people begin to have trouble reading small print once they reach their early 40’s. This is because the eyes take longer to focus, and eventually are not able to adjust to small print as they once did. Reading glasses will usually help this problem and there is no further need for intervention.

If you notice that colors are less vibrant, and you have trouble driving at night, you may have a cataract starting. Cataracts are a slow buildup of protein deposits that cloud up the lens of your eye. Cataracts are now easily treated in outpatient surgery, and are no reason for concern. In fact, you may not need glasses once you have cataract surgery to remove the clouded lenses.

One of the bigger eyesight emergencies is a retinal detachment. As eyes get older, retinal detachment is more likely to occur. Visually, you may see new floaters, or different colored flashes. If you have eyesight that has changed rapidly, you need to go see your eye doctor.

With a retinal detachment, it is possible to repair the problem if it is caught in time. Waiting to see the eye doctor when there is a retinal detachment may result in a permanent loss of eyesight in that eye.

Over the years, protect your eyesight with UV ray sunglasses and avoid harsh lighting whenever possible. Meet with your eye doctor regularly to establish how your eyesight is on a consistent basis. When there is a problem, call your doctor right away to avoid further complications.

You may not have 20/20 vision, but that does not mean you can’t take steps to keep your eyesight as healthy as possible. Harsh lighting, poor nutrition, and eye strain can all have a negative effect on your eyesight.

Wear Sunglasses in Harsh Light

Sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the bright light of the sun, but good sunglasses also offer your eyes protection from ultraviolet rays. Exposure to UV rays over the years can cause you to develop cataracts and can cause damage to your retinas. Keep your eyesight strong by wearing sunglasses with a UV protective coating.

Eat a Well-Balanced Diet

The reason carrots are always touted as a food that is beneficial for your eyesight is because carrots are full of vitamin A. This vitamin is necessary for eye health, but other vitamins play a role in healthy eyesight too. Zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins E and C are all nutrients that help your eyesight remain strong.

As you get older, it is more important than ever to eat a healthy diet to support your eyesight. Macular degeneration is a progressive disease of the eye, eventually causing blindness. The proper nutrients will help your body manage the effects caused from macular degeneration and may slow down the process.

Avoid Eye Strain When Possible

If you work all day under harsh lighting or if you sit in front of the computer screen all day, try to give yourself frequent breaks. While eye strain may not cause your eyesight to get worse, eye strain is a sign that your eyes are tired and need to relax.

Attend Regular Eye Checkups

As you get older, you probably feel as though you don’t need to see your eye doctor as often. Your prescription probably hasn’t changed much over the years, and visits may seem fruitless. To keep your eyesight in good shape, go to regular checkups with your doctor. A small problem caught early will be better for your overall well-being than not catching a small problem in time.

Protect your eyesight regularly by eating a healthier diet, avoiding harsh lighting and taking a break when you are feeling the effects of eye strain.

For the first time, laser technology allows surgeons to treat cataracts and astigmatism in one procedure. New ReVista laser-assisted cataract surgery uses precise laser guided incisions to gently reshape the eye to correct astigmatism and fragment the cataract. Recently approved by the FDA, this bladeless technology is used in less than one percent of cataract surgeries today.

“ReVista laser-assisted cataract surgery offers a level of customization that has never before been available,&lrquo; according to Drs. Rashid, Rice, Flynn and Reilly of Rashid, Rice, and Flynn Eye Associates, PLLC. ReVista incorporates highly advanced mapping of your eye, to personalize the treatment plan. These 3-D measurements guide the laser’s highly accurate micron-level incisions. Computerized planning and laser astigmatism correction join together to offer each patient restored clarity and quality of life.

“After decades of serving this community, ReVista is the most exciting advance we can offer our patients,” added Drs. Rashid, Rice, Flynn, and Reilly . “We are proud to be among the first surgeons to offer this in San Antonio. With femtosecond laser technology, we can take an already safe procedure and make it even better. Our goal is to give each patient the best possible vision.”

Cataract surgery has evolved dramatically over the years, to an advanced “no-patch, no-stitch” individualized 15 minute surgery with minimal recovery time. “We are committed to staying on the leading edge, so the introduction of ReVista laser-assisted cataract surgery is part of our continued commitment to offering our patients the best possible care,” states Drs. Rashid, Rice, Flynn and Reilly.

About Cataracts:
Half of Americans will develop cataracts by age 80. Cataracts are the clouding of the lens inside the eye, which develops gradually over the years. Surgery to remove cataracts is one of the most effective and frequently performed operations in the United States. This outpatient surgery generally takes less than fifteen minutes, and allows you to get back to your life the next day.

About Astigmatism:
An imperfection in the curvature of the cornea or lens of the eye is called astigmatism. It blurs vision by keeping the light from focusing properly on the retina at the back of your eye. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, astigmatism affects about one in three people.

About ReVista:
ReVista laser-assisted cataract surgery combines powerful state-of-the-art testing which maps each patient‘s eyes, with the precision of laser incisions and astigmatism correction. This accurate, bladeless, customizable process helps each patient get the best possible vision.

The Specialty Surgery Center, the home of the laser in San Antonio, is dedicated to outpatient surgery, providing compassionate personalized care to each patient. Some of the most qualified and highly trained surgeons in San Antonio choose to do their surgeries here. This center is jointly owned by local surgeons, including Drs. Rashid, Rice, and Flynn, and AmSurg, the largest cataract surgery provider in the United States.
